Social Media & Controversy (Distance Learning)

Social media is a great promotional tool. However in the occurrence of scandal, social media can spread and taint a story to new levels. In the event of the PSU scandal, social media has brought the story beyond television and newspapers all the way to the internet where bloggers have free reign over their opinions. Meaning, that social media outlets have evolved from conversations regarding the facts- to opinions and insults directed towards PSU, Paterno, Sandusky, and all other involved parties. Although all conversations regarding the entire affair are negative, it was very interesting to see how unintelligent many of the conversations regarding this matter.
Power, media, and deviance are all themes both directly and indirectly discussed by different bloggers. Power, especially that of PSU and those in high power whom withheld information and forced witnesses into silence. Deviance, again in regards to withholding knowledge of any and all illegal sexual activity. Most prominent however, is seen both in conversation and the all over impact of the media over the story. All three of which intersect as the story essentially blew up, and as the public learned how PSU abused its power and influence into hindering justice.
Although I am in complete disagreement of how the situation was handled by those in power at PSU, I can understand the initial reaction. Yes, they did not want their reputation to be tarnished by one person's indiscretions. However, what was at stake was a price too high. Not only was the initial coverup illegal and immoral, but it also continued to leave children at risk and allowed abuse to continue.
Overall, I am disgusted by this story. Although I am aware that there are coverups in existence and that there will be coverups in the future I am just horrified at the thought that the reputation of a school could ever be held above the safety of children.
