Penn State Scandal

Social media has changed how the whole world communicates. In terms of the PSU scandal, social media has allowed for everyone to voice their opinions on the topic. This can be seen in both a positive and negative way. In a positive light, social media is an outlet for victims where they can share their stories, and people everywhere can support them and let the perpetrators know of their disgust. On the flip side, with their thoughts and opinions, people can make the victims feel as if they were the ones who did something wrong.
Media is very influential in our culture and it has the power to make people perceive subjects and other people in a certain light. We give the media and people (football coaches, athletes, etc.) this power which allows them to act in a way in which they feel they can get away with things. Others will go out of their way to protect them. When media and people defy social laws or Judaical laws, there are people right behind them to make the issue "go away".
Our culture is heavily influenced by fame. People with fame are given power. Joe Paterno and his coaching staff used their fame and power to cover up this sexual abuse scandal and let it continue. All in the name of the school's "reputation" (fame). There is no excuse for what happened. Everyone involved should be punished. This is sending a message that we put more emphasis on protecting our reputation than an innocent child.
I think the scandal is disgusting. There is no way a man should "enjoy hanging out with young people" as much as Sandusky. He needs to get the maximum punishment possible. As for the cover up, I think it empowers other coaches and athletes to do things like this, thinking they can get away with it. It is horrible the power that we give these HUMAN BEINGS.
