Taking Action!

Katherine Switzer was one of the first women to run in the Boston Marathon, however, she took major risks to accomplish her goal. She ran a race that women were simply not allowed to run. Despite her fear in entering a forbidden race, she took a chance. Though she wanted to just run a race, she became a role model and respected figure for many women athletes. It amazes me that these women, like Switzer, accepted the challenges they faced and inevitably changed the system. Switzer is just one great example we can follow for being strong, empowering, and liberating.

I'm very glad to see many of our classmates listening and actively participating in classroom conversations. I love seeing how people react and adhere to many of the different issues and topics we've been discussing. Being in this class is allowing students to really SEE the other sides and to make rational realizations about gender, race, ethnicity, and sport. So, what do we really take from all this? We are able to see that something is wrong or that it is an issue, but then what? Do we let the cycle continue? It is up to us to break through racism, sexism, and corporate greed issues that separate and deny others to a better life. At some point, we may be forced to face these issues on a personal level. How will you deal with it?

I'm hoping these conversations will continue inside the classroom, as well as outside the classroom.
