Sexist media coverage

While flipping through the pages of Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, I noticed something intriguing. Why is it that so many females in sports only get major media coverage when it has something to do with sex, and apperance. Danica Patrick one of the only females in the Nascar racing industry posed for this issue. Although I must say the pictures came out tasteful and nice the interview disturbed me. Dan Patrick interviewed her and all the questions he had refered to her as if he was fulfilling a sexual fantasy of his. Not once did he ask her what was her plans for improving in her sport or anything that had to do with driving a race car. Instead he ask her what does she wear under her race suit on race day, and does she wear makeup on race day. So I did more research to see if there was anything else about Danica on the home page of Nascar and to my surprise there was nothing. So I'm posing the question why is it that females only get major media coverage when it has to do with their apperance or sexual preferance? Why is the media so geared toward mens performance on the field, and womens performance off the field.

I feel that the interviewer, Dan Patrick, was asking those questions because Sport Illustrated target audience mostly consists of men. Don't the various swimsuit editions clarify this?!?!
Although, I do agree with you and how some questions may have been inappropriate and shallow; but it is important to note the Sports Illustrated appeals mostly male readers.
Also, Danica Patrick is an extremely talented racer but she also is very attractive. She isn’t like Anna Kornikova, who just has the looks. Patrick truly is the complete woman. Her title championships have proven this.
So I say if your talented in your particular sport and so happen to be good looking as well… than whats wrong with that?
Another point I would like to make is that Danica Patrick posed willingly. There wasn’t any one that forced her to pose and she probably had some idea of what kind of questions were going to be asked. There had to have been discussion between her managers/publicist and Sports Illustrated. Patrick’s management team realized this could possibly better Patrick’s career and give her even more exposure. First and foremost Patrick is a gifted racer that competes at a world class level. Second, she is a hot momma. Joking! She is extremely attractive by standards of men across the nation.
