"Player's Wives"

The 2008 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition features male professional athletes' wives. The wives pose in skimpy, sexy swimsuits. This photo is next to a head shot of their professional athlete husbands.
The wives are shown as trophies. This is a media discourse that shows an ideal prize (the wives) that the readers idolize. It is portraying a premier life to the target market (men in their 20's-50's) that says these featured players have conquered, not only professional careers as athletes, but the trophy wives to go with it.
Tell me what you think.

I think you bring up an interesting point, that these women are looked upon as trophies, but it's never the men that are looked upon as the trophy. One could assume that there aren't too many female athletes who have these husbands who are eye candy, or are even eye candy themselves, since we all know sex sells. I think that because of the male athletes fame and fortune they are able to attract these trophy wives, obviously thats not the message that kids should be receiving but then thats just how the media portraits it.

agree with you Erika about these "hot half naked" wives just being another one of the benefits of being a famous athlete. These male figures can not just play the game that they love they have to have all the accessories that come with their new lavish lives. But this is also an example of false meritocracy, where just because there are certain players who have these "hot" wives that can pose half naked in a bathing suit, does not mean that every player that joins a sport will have beautiful women to come with the package of being an athlete. It only happens to very few people, and these few people are the ones who are the most publicized and famous. These professional athletes should not be showing off their wives they should be showing off their skills. I think this has become so normal for people to see due to how our culture. I don’t think that it is appropriate to show these women off in Spots Illustrated.

This photo spread first gained a bit of status during a very pecuiar circumstance: under the Congresional hearing into Steroids in Baseball. As yu may notice, one of the wives featured in her swimsuit is Roger Clemens' wife. It was revealed that she was the one in the household taking HGH, in order to look like a model for this shoot. Not only are the athetes competing, and perhas "cheating" by using steroids, but there now seems to be a "trophy wife" competition, which requires the same methods of body shaping and seroid use.
