social media has shaped the penn state scandal in the way that it has provided a forum for people aorund the country and the globe to express their opinons and knowledge about the situation. ofcourse there are opposite views about the subject and so social media allows for a discussion amongst the educated, the not-so-educated, and the uninformed.
as one person tweeted " absolute power corrupts absolutely" in other words, when certain organizations are allowed unmonitored power, things happen that boggle the minds of the general public. ofcourse often the media can help monitor and put a limit on the things that these people can get away with, but moreoften than none, the most horrendous crimes go unnoticed. it is not uncommon to find that when prestige and public pride are the most important aims of a group the regards of the dignity and worthiness of others- defenseless- are disregarded, and the crimes against them go impune.
the only way this situation could be explained is by understanding that interests of power and corruption often coexist and the agendas of these powerful people lead them to dismiss serious crimes in order to protect their interests and reputations. a similar situation can be observed within the cases of child molestation within the catholic church; prominent religious leaders felt that alerting the public of this abuse would create a scandal that was not necessary and would lead to a loss of followers.
i personally feel that this situation is sad, yet it reminds us that we should not put our trust in establishments or individuals to the point of idolizing them and following them blindly. corruption is rampant within the sports world and we the genral public often make it easier for these enviroments to grow into sespools of greed, crime, and hypocrisy.
