Thus far in our class, the discussion which sparked my interest was the one about privilege. The clips we watched on Tim Wise’s speech were both entertaining as well as informative. Where I went to high school, nearly everyone came from wealthy white families. There just wasn’t much diversity- and it was what our town was known for! However, living there and then moving away really put things in perspective. I used to think that money was the basis for everything- however some of the richest and most privileged families had HORRIBLE family lives. Many of the kids in that town could have anything they wanted…but many didn’t even have ties to their parents, and because of that so many kids got into trouble and never went on to college/never completed it. I would definitely say that is just a waste of so much potential. Now I realize that it doesn’t always have to be about what you are or are not given, it’s what you do with the blessings you do have in life. True, for some you will have to work harder than others..whether it is because of your race, gender, sexual orientation, or whatever circumstance you have been given, but at the end of the day you will never achieve anything if you don’t give it your all. If you give up then that’s the only thing that will make you a failure.
