Athletes and Playboy

Are female athletes posing in playboy harming or helping women’s advancement in sport? Fox Sports stated that in order for a woman to be successful as an athlete, she must be attractive. They also went on to take a vote to see what top ten women men would like to see pose nude for Playboy. Another source claimed that ”FHM featured an issue with female athletes posing on the cover. While they did have the courtesy of actually naming these women, they still did not fail to place them in swimsuits.” (Eyes Wide Open) They also don’t usually feature the women actually participating the sport in which they play. For example, if Amanda Beard were to pose for a magazine, they may feature her in a swimsuit, but she most likely wouldn’t be in water or swim laps in an action shot. How many times have we seen Michal Phelps swimming the butterfly stroke in his feature? The answer, multiple. The next time I see women in a magazine, I would hope that they are in their element and fully clothed.

I don't mind seeing women athletes pose nude for magazines rather than in their uniforms. I believe that if it helps them with how they feel about themselves then they should go right ahead and do it. It's true that we rarely see any action shots of women in their uniform. We rarely see them with fierce expressions on their face. Although we know they are above average in their athletics the way they are portrayed makes them seem maybe fragile.
I'm not saying that it women should only be portrayed as fierce and aggressive as are most male athletes, because that is not what i believe. I think that there should be more of it. I also don't think that female athletes should NEVER pose nude or provocatively. They certainly always have the choice to do it or not do it. If they want to I say go ahead and let them because if they are a wonderful athlete then I will always see them for that first.

I also agree that it is up to the athlete whether or not they pose nude. If they feel comfortable with their bodies and want to show them off it is their decision. I don' believe that for women to be successful in a sport, they must be attractive. There are many successful female athletes who haven't posed provocatively. Women who pose in these magazines may get more attention but that doesn't always mean that they are successful in their sport. Although many women aren't shown in magazines playing their sport, it seems to me as though more and more magazines are making improvements in this and showing female athletes in more athletic and strong poses.

I also agree that female athletes have a choice as to whether or not they pose nude. I also agree that women who pose provocatively in magazines such as these may get more attention, but that doesn't mean that they are successful in their sport. Prime example of this is Anna Kournikova. She gets a lot of media attention posing in magazines and such, but she's not very successful in tennis. I'd like to some more improvements made in these magazines in showing female athletes in more athletic and strong poses. A female athlete can pose in a magazine in their athleltic attire, in action shot, look athletic and yet feminine and attractive at the same time. and whether these athletes like it or not, once they are in the media's eye they become role models for millions of young girls. And as the saying goes "Not all publicity is good publicity."
