First and foremost...Way to go Ladies of Palestine!! Although crazy to think that this is 2011 and these ladies are only now enjoying the benefits of an 11-a-side soccer team, any accomplish for women in sport should be celebrated and recognized.

This article highlighted a few aspects for women in sports. One of the first things I noticed in the picture of the girl kicking the ball is her attire, which included a scarf that covers her head and modesty stocking so that she did not expose her legs. The clothes she was wearing was comparable to limitations of Victorian times in the fact that she was still conditioned to wear what was deemed appropriate for women by her society, even while playing sports. Even though she was the only member of her team wearing a scarf and tights, when you compare it to the picture of the crowd of women wearing similar head coverings, it shows the restrictions and expectations of women in Palestine.

Secondly was the fact that although women were allowed to play soccer before this recent achievement, it was under the confines of being played indoor and only five-a-side league. This shows that women are still not being treated as second class citizens in many parts of the world and not enjoying equal or equivalent liberties in society let alone in sports. This is a country that doesn’t have Title IX and it is clear how different men and women are treated. Palestine is a part of the world that is extreme in its differences between the treatment of men and women, but this opens the rest of the world to see how important it is to have laws and regulations to facilitate women to gain equality and how this can be done through sports.
