Women in the Media

I was looking through FLEX magazine the other day. As I flipped though the pages, I finally came across an article on a women’s bodybuilding competition. It was hidden in the middle of the magazine. The article was brief only stating where it was at and the top five winners. The pictures that accompanied the article were very small. This was the only article about women in the whole magazine. The only other female representation in the magazine was the women being used in the ads. All the women in the different ads were wearing very revealing outfits posing in sexually provocative ways. Having women pose like this in the media are taking away from the advancements that they are making towards equality with men in society. By having women pose as sexual objects in these ads, women will not be able to break away from that image in the media and continue with no changes made.

Just wanted to make a quick comment concerning how most women are depicted in todays magazines. Take a look in Maxim, FHM, or King Magazines and they all depict women either as extremely vulnerable or sexual objects soley for mens enjoyment purposes. A lot of the models in these magazines are college graduates with big aspirations. However their assets are what seem to get the big attention. In my opinion, knowledge equals strength and to most men that is a threat.

I think the reasons of the inequality shown in the magazine such as fewer articles and fewer pictures about female athletes are because these magazines are edited by mostly by men and reflecting the principles of the companies or institutions which are managed by men who boast masculine hegemonic power.

In response to all of the comments, I have to agree. I you look at any sports magazine, you will barely fnd any females, except for in the ADs. Looking at SI.com the front page of the website is all about men. The only thing you see about females is hottest female, or swimsuit contest. Looking through any sports magazine you might come across one article about a female athlete, but thats very rare. It is sad to think this is what our society has done to female athletes in the media, hopefully one day it will change.
